How to Pay Commercial Rent by Credit Card in Canada

For most businesses, rent is the biggest fixed cost on the books — and the least flexible. The landlord wants a pre-authorized debit or a cheque on the first, the cash leaves your account instantly, and you earn nothing on it. Year after year.

With Chexy, you can pay your commercial lease on a Visa or Mastercard. Your landlord still receives the payment by e-Transfer, pre-authorized debit, or Bill Pay — exactly as they do today. Nothing changes for them; everything changes for your cash flow.

Can you pay commercial rent with a credit card?

Yes — office, retail, warehouse, clinic, studio, and co-working leases can all be paid by Visa or Mastercard through Chexy. Note that commercial rent is not supported on American Express — that's an Amex rule, not a Chexy one. If Amex is your main card, use it for your supplier, tax, insurance, and utility payments, and route rent to a Visa or Mastercard.

Why put rent on a card?

Float on your largest fixed cost. A $10,000/month lease paid by card means $10,000 stays in your account for weeks longer, every single month. Over a year, that's a permanent improvement in your working capital position.

Rewards on spend that earned nothing. $120,000/year of rent at 1.5–2 points per dollar is 180,000–240,000 points annually — often worth $2,700–$4,800 redeemed for travel. The fee (1.99%–2.40%, about $2,388–$2,880/year on that lease) is generally tax-deductible, while rewards typically aren't taxed.

Welcome bonuses on autopilot. A single quarter of rent clears most cards' minimum-spend requirements without changing your spending at all.

Never miss the first of the month. Set it up once; Chexy charges your card four business days before the due date and pays your landlord on the due date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay commercial rent with Amex?

No — commercial leases aren't an Amex-supported payment category. Use Visa or Mastercard for rent, and your Amex for supplier purchases, taxes, insurance, utilities, and ad spend.

Does my landlord need to accept credit cards?

No. Your landlord is paid by e-Transfer, pre-authorized debit, or Bill Pay, the same as today. They don't need to do anything.

What about my co-working membership?

Same answer: Visa or Mastercard through Chexy if they invoice you rather than charging a card.

Is residential rent different?

Yes — residential rent runs through Chexy personal accounts and has its own rules. This article covers business leases.
