Scan a Bill to Pay It with a Credit Card: How Chexy Bill Upload Works

Chexy Staff·Bill uploadChexyBill Forwarding

Chexy is a Canadian bill-pay platform that lets you pay eligible bills with a credit card to earn points or cashback. With Chexy Bill Upload, you can upload, scan, or email a bill and Chexy reads key details (payee, amount, due date, frequency) to create a draft payment—nothing is paid until you review and confirm. There is the account number to dig out, the due date to check, the amount to type in, and the frequency to choose. Five minutes of setup standing between you and the rewards.

Chexy's bill upload feature takes care of most of that. Send us your bill and we will turn it into a draft payment. Your part takes seconds. Ours takes a couple of minutes. Nothing is charged until you review it and confirm.

Here is how it works.

Two Easy Ways to Send Us Your Bill

Scan your bill

In the app, choose to pay a bill and select Scan the Bill. Take a photo using your phone, or upload the bill as a file or image.

If you are using a photo, make sure it is clear and easy to read, with no wrinkles, folds, or heavy shadows. The clearer the image, the faster and more accurate the setup.

Email your bill

You can also forward a bill it to [email protected] from the email address linked to your Chexy account. Forwarding takes seconds, and we usually have the draft ready within a couple of minutes.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • It has to come from the email address linked to your Chexy account. That is how we match the bill to you.
  • Does Apple Hide My Email work with bill forwarding? If you signed up using Apple's private relay email, we cannot match it to your account. Use the scan option instead.

What to Send

Send the bill, invoice, or statement: the document that shows what you owe, who you owe it to, and when it is due.

Please do not send a receipt or proof of payment. Those show a payment that has already been made, so there is nothing for us to set up.

How It Works

  1. Log into your account, or sign up for Chexy.
  2. Select the option to pay a bill, then choose Scan the Bill, or forward the bill to [email protected] instead.
  3. Chexy analyzes the document and pulls out the payee or biller name, the amount, the due date, and the payment frequency. This can take a couple of minutes.
  4. You will see a review screen with everything we detected. Check it over and edit anything that looks incorrect. If Chexy is not confident about a detail, it leaves the field blank and asks you to complete it rather than guessing.
  5. Choose your payout method. This is the one part we cannot pull from the bill: Bill Pay, where you enter your account number or whatever reference number your payee requires, or Pre-Authorized Debit, where you confirm the details and provide your void cheque information.
  6. Review the payment and submit it. Only then does anything happen.

An uploaded bill is only used to create a draft payment. Chexy won’t send or charge anything until you review and confirm. You review and confirm every payment before it is sent, and if any details are unclear, we ask you to review them.

Before You Pay: Confirm These 3 Details

1. Your funding source. Choose which card or account is paying. This is the part that earns you points or cashback, so choose accordingly.

2. The payment date. Chexy suggests a date based on the due date on your bill. It is worth scheduling a little earlier so the payment lands with time to spare.

3. The frequency. Chexy suggests a frequency based on the bill, and for utilities it will often suggest monthly. If your bill changes from cycle to cycle and you would rather handle them one at a time, switch it to a one-time payment before you confirm.

After You Upload: Where the Draft Shows Up

Once your bill has been processed, you will receive a push notification in the app confirming it is ready, and the draft will appear in the Drafts section on your homepage.

There is no separate confirmation email and no in-app badge, so keep an eye on your notifications after uploading.

Processing Fee

Nothing extra. Bill upload is simply a faster way to set up a payment you were going to make anyway, so Chexy's standard 1.75% processing fee on Canadian-issued cards applies, the same as any other payment on the platform.

What you earn back depends on the card you use. See how to earn rewards paying bills with a credit card for the cards that make the math work hardest.

Examples of the bills you can pay

Bill upload works best for the payments that were the most time-consuming to set up manually:

  • Utilities and phone bills, where the amount changes every month
  • Property tax and municipal bills
  • Insurance premiums
  • Professional services invoices
  • Household expenses and rent
  • Any biller you would otherwise have to add as a custom payee

Bill Upload: Trouble Shooting

The upload failed. The most common reason is file size. Try a smaller version, a lower-resolution photo, or a single-page PDF rather than a full statement.

Some fields are blank in the draft. Chexy leaves a field blank when it is not confident it has read the detail correctly. Complete it from your bill and continue.

A detail is incorrect. Edit it in the draft before you submit. Nothing is charged until you do.

You forwarded a bill and nothing happened. Check that you sent it from the email address linked to your Chexy account. If you did, look for a reply from Chexy explaining what went wrong.

Your payee is not supported. Some payees cannot be paid through Chexy. See Unsupported Bill Pay Payees for the full list: https://intercom.help/chexy/en/articles/12313452-unsupported-bill-pay-payees
