Why Should You Pay Bills with a Credit Card in Ontario?

Paying bills with a credit card comes with a variety of perks that can make your expenses work for you:

Earn Rewards

Like rent, you can earn rewards—points, cashback, or miles—by paying your bills with a credit card. These rewards can add up to savings, free flights, or travel upgrades. For example, using the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card, which offers 4% cashback on recurring bills, can save you quite a bit of money.

Here’s a real-life example of how much your bills can cost and how much cashback you can earn:

  • Monthly car payment: $400

  • Phone bill: $120

  • Internet bill: $70

  • Daycare fees: $500

  • Total: $1,090

After Chexy fees (1.75%), you’d still earn about $23.50 in cashback each month or $282 per year. That’s extra money in your pocket compared to paying bills through bank transfer or other methods, which earn you nothing.

The extra cash you earn can be used for other expenses like rent, which you can also pay with your credit card!

Build Credit

Paying bills with your credit card and paying off the balance in full every month can help build your credit score over time. By showing the credit bureaus that you’re using credit responsibly, you’ll boost your payment history, one of the key factors in determining your score.

Easy Expense Tracking

Using one credit card for recurring bills makes your finances easy to manage. Most, if not all, of your household expenses can be consolidated in one place, making it easier to track spending and manage your budget.

Set It and Forget It with Automatic Payments

Setting up automatic bill payments is simple. Chexy charges your credit card four business days before the bill is due, and the payment is sent on the due date. This way, you never have to track multiple due dates or worry about missed payments.

If you need to update payment details, you can easily make changes in your Chexy Dashboard.

Is It Worth Paying Your Bills with a Credit Card in Ontario?

It is highly worth paying your bills with a credit card, if:

  • Your credit card offers rewards (like points or cashback) that outweigh the 1.75% fee, and

  • You use your credit card responsibly, paying the balance in full each month.

Avoiding interest charges, late fees, and any kind of debt is crucial, as they can quickly cancel out any rewards you earn.

Just like rent payments, you need to account for all bills in your monthly budget. Stay on top of your spending and ensure you always have enough to pay off your credit card. Do that, and you’re set for success!
